Ancient Empires as Byzantium, Persia, Christianity, Judaism, the spread of Islam through the early Caliphate and modern concerns about energy and the environment are dealt with the precision of a surgeon’s knife and a historian’s detached view. But what makes this book so valuable is its author's intimate knowledge of the lethal and a-historical political misconceptions in the USA, Israel and Europe about the Middle East. The political intrigues in the White House and the muddled views of the American and Israeli political elites about the real conditions of the area are laid bare and the reader has the opportunity to criticize western leaders in a historical perspective. Great work and in depth analysis .

The history of the Middle East is too rich and variegated to be covered by a single historical novel. However, The Call of the Desert attempts in an admirable way to give answers to very difficult and thus real questions about an area which is the epicenter of world history in the making. Why Iraq and Syria are in chaos? Why are Iranians fighting in Syria against ISIS? What is the Caliphate and why are Muslims attracted to it? Why has the USA and Europe made a historical blunder interfering into the affairs of peoples we, of the West, know very little about?
The above questions about the drama unfolding in the deserts and the ancient hubs of human civilization are intertwined with the Middle East energy resources, and the huge interests of the West for those assets. Money together with political power games in the Imperial City, Washington, turn to a deadly combination of human ambitions, old and new love affairs and a friendship which is tested by the stark necessity of historical contingency. This concoction is more potent than a witch’s brew when Israel walks into the picture. The end game is check mate for all the participants.
The reader of The Call of the Desert won’t be either bored or fed with idle talk. It’s time to start looking the reality on the ground as it is and not as we wish it is.
I got this book because the story compared with events ongoing today really intrigued me. And yes, it is well presented and a very compelling story that I would love to finish- or at least get halfway through. The problem is I cannot get past all of the romanticism regarding Hellenistic ideals, Ancient Greek gods, glorification of previous battles and their conqueror's egos or the tragic fall of the defeated, love and loss. This is the primary language and mindset of the main character Demetris. And it does not pertain only to the history covered in this book. The entire book is written in this"style" It takes hundreds of words to make one simple statement that can be just as eloquently made with few. This character and his narrative/perspective in which (most) the story unfolds reminds me of my old Latin instructor who would make us listen to his lectures on the glory of Ancient Rome, pretended he was Zeus, and actually wore togas to parties. Instead of just saying "take a seat and get ready for class" he would beat his chest and boast "Come here to me now my diligent disciples with a thirst for truth and eagerness to bear witness to all the knowledge that my lips can part unto you." While yes, very dramatic and fun- for a moment- the constant never ending, glory to the old world, dramatic, theatrical, reminiscent tone is just too much. Get to the point all ready!!!
